Not About Me

A friend and I were chuckling about our quickness to internalize a conflict, or assume that we have injured or offended someone and must remedy it. She shared a funny experience which served as a recent reality check for her.
She and her family were relaxing on their back patio after Thanksgiving dinner. Seeing her neighbors doing the same thing on their front porch, she called out to welcome them over for a visit. They didn't seem to respond, and then filed back inside the house. Her immediate response to her son was, "Oh No! I must have offended them! Did I do something wrong?!" His chiding response was, "Ma! The football game just came on. It has nothing to do with you. It's like the sponsor and the sponsee watching football together, and during the huddle, the sponsor says 'I bet you think they are talking about you!.'"
We laughed together, reminding one another to keep some perspective and to not take life, and ourselves so seriously.
As my husband likes to quip, "It's crowded here at the center of the universe!"
