Thriving or Surviving

My counselor/mentor asked me a formative question a year and a half ago. She asked me, "Do you feel like your life is characterized more by surviving or thriving? " I couldn't initially answer. It triggered a series of questions in my own mind. How realistic is it, really, to expect to thrive? What would that look like, in my life as a mom, ministry wife, teacher, woman? The thoughts that poured forth were: To live from a center of joy and wellness. To be free from comparing myself to other people. To be attentive to my needs for sleep, refreshment, and creative outlets. To realize that it is not all about me, to not take everything personally, and to not be hypersensitive. To realize that having the ability to pull something off is not a mandate to try to do so. To live from a place of call and not panic. To learn to be proactive about self-care, and to know that being well makes me available to those who need me most. Is it possible to pour oneself out in service to God and others and personally thrive? Weren't we always to operate on just what we needed, and not more? Would moving beyond survival be self-serving?
She explained that it wasn't an all or nothing scenario. There would always be times of compete depletion, and just getting by, but that living that way was neither healthy nor sustainable. but that it was reasonable to expect to and seek to thrive, on a fairly regulary basis. I realized that just getting by, surviving my days, had become my expectation, which seemed fine til I realized God had more in store for me. He has helped me not to compartmentalize caring for myself and caring for others. Both are crucial and interrelated. Yes, by His grace, it is possible to pour out our lives in service to God and others and personally thrive. To live into what we were made for, and to allow our Creator to lavishly love us as well.
Are you surviving or thriving or somewhere in-between? What would/or does thriving look like in your life and circumstance?
